Spain from India: Madrid, Seville, Granada and Barcelona, how many days, and what a trip costs
Spain is a great first or second Europe trip from India. In about ten days you get Madrid's art and palaces, the Moorish palaces of Seville and Granada, flamenco in the evenings and Gaudi's buildings in Barcelona. Fast AVE trains link the big cities, the food is relaxed and late, and day-to-day costs are lower than in Switzerland, France or the UK.
How many days do you need?
Plan on nine to twelve days. A good route lands in Madrid for three days, with a day trip to Toledo, then takes the AVE train south to Seville for two days and Granada for two days for the Alhambra. Finish with three days in Barcelona and fly home from there, so you don't have to go back the way you came. With only a week, skip Andalusia and do Madrid and Barcelona, which are about three hours apart by train.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 10-day Spain trip in December comes to about ₹6,07,100, or ₹3,03,550 per person. That covers return flights, trains and flights inside Spain, the hotel, food, local transport, the attractions we pick for you, the Schengen visa, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. Summer and Easter week push hotel prices up the most, so the month you pick matters.

Attractions worth paying for
- Sagrada Familia in Barcelona: about ₹2,847 per adult. Tickets are timed and sell out, so book online as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Park Guell: about ₹1,708, and Casa Batllo: about ₹3,322, if you want to see a Gaudi house inside.
- Alhambra and Generalife in Granada: about ₹1,993. This is the ticket to book first, often weeks ahead; the palace entry is at a fixed time.
- Real Alcazar of Seville: about ₹1,424, and Seville Cathedral and the Giralda: about ₹1,234.
- Royal Palace of Madrid: about ₹1,329, and the Prado Museum: about ₹1,424.
- Toledo day trip from Madrid: about ₹5,694 for an old walled city on a hill.
- A flamenco show, either the Flamenco show in Triana in Seville (about ₹2,847) or Sacromonte cave flamenco in Granada (about ₹3,322).
- For football fans, the Camp Nou stadium tour (about ₹2,847) or the Bernabeu stadium tour (about ₹2,847).
Free and cheap things to do
Walk Las Ramblas and the narrow lanes of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, spend an afternoon on Barceloneta beach, and watch the Magic Fountain of Montjuic in the evening. In Madrid, Retiro Park is free and lovely for a slow morning, and Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol come alive at night. Seville's Plaza de Espana is free and one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, and in Granada the Mirador de San Nicolas gives you a sunset view of the Alhambra for nothing.
When to go
June to August is peak season, with the highest prices and real heat in Seville and Granada, where afternoons can pass 40°C. Easter week in April is also busy and expensive. The best balance is May, September and October: warm, sunny and less crowded. March and December are fine for cities. January, February and November are the cheapest months, cool but mostly dry in Madrid.
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, applied for through Spain's visa application centre in India. The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, with a service charge on top; children under 6 pay no visa fee. Processing usually takes about 15 days but can be longer in summer, and appointment slots fill up, so apply one to two months before you fly. You will need return tickets, hotel bookings, travel insurance and bank statements.
Tips that save money
- Book AVE train tickets early on the Renfe site; prices rise as the date gets closer, and other operators on the Madrid to Barcelona line can be cheaper.
- Many museums, including the Prado, have free entry in the last hours of some days; check before you buy.
- Lunch menus (menu del dia) give you two or three courses for much less than dinner.
- Indian restaurants are easy to find in Madrid and Barcelona; carry a few snacks for Seville and Granada, where dinner starts late.
