Switzerland from India: Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt, how many days, and what a trip costs
Switzerland is the first Europe trip for a lot of Indian families, and it lives up to the photos: lakes, snow peaks, neat towns and trains that run to the minute. It is also one of the most expensive countries in the world, so a good Swiss trip is mostly about choosing which mountains to go up and moving around with as few separate tickets as possible.
How many days do you need?
Plan on six to eight days. Base yourself in Lucerne for two or three nights for the lake, the old town and one of Titlis or Pilatus. Move to Interlaken for two or three nights; it is the gateway to Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald and the Lauterbrunnen valley. With eight days, add Zermatt for two nights to see the Matterhorn, and keep half a day for Zurich and the Rhine Falls before you fly home. Changing hotels every night wastes time; two or three bases work much better.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 10-day Switzerland trip in December comes to about ₹8,04,900, or ₹4,02,450 per person. That covers return flights, the hotel, food, local transport, the attractions we pick for you, the Schengen visa, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. The mountain excursions are the big extras, so pick two or three rather than trying to do every peak.

Things worth paying for
- Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe: about ₹23,000 per adult. It's the costliest day of most trips, so go on a clear morning; check the summit weather before you set off.
- Mount Titlis with Cliff Walk: about ₹10,000, a full day from Lucerne with snow on top even in summer.
- Mount Pilatus golden round trip: about ₹11,000. Boat, cogwheel railway up, cable car down: one of the best days out from Lucerne.
- Grindelwald First cliff walk and First Flyer: about ₹9,000, a cheaper mountain half-day than Jungfraujoch with big views.
- Gornergrat railway: about ₹9,000, the classic Matterhorn view from Zermatt, or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at about ₹11,000 if you want snow underfoot.
- Lake Lucerne cruise: about ₹3,000, and the Lake Brienz cruise from Interlaken: about ₹4,000.
- Rhine Falls trip: about ₹3,000, an easy half-day from Zurich before your flight.
Free and cheap things to do
Walk across Chapel Bridge and through Lucerne's old town. In the Lauterbrunnen valley you can walk past waterfalls for free, and in Interlaken you can sit in Hohematte park and watch paragliders land against the Jungfrau. Zermatt has no petrol cars, so an evening walk through the village is calm and pretty. In Zurich, the lakeside promenade and Bahnhofstrasse are free to stroll, and the Harder Kulm funicular at about ₹4,000 is a cheap sunset viewpoint above Interlaken.
When to go
May, September and October are the best balance: good weather, green valleys and fewer crowds than summer. June to August is the peak season, warm in the valleys with highs in the mid-20s in Zurich, and the busiest and dearest time, as are Christmas and the January ski season. March, April and November are quiet and cheaper, but some mountain lifts close for maintenance then, so check that the trips you want are running. Winter is cold, around 3 to 5°C by day in Zurich, and best if you want snow everywhere.
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for Switzerland. You apply through the visa application centre for the Swiss embassy, with your flight bookings, hotel bookings, travel insurance and bank statements. Appointments fill up fast before summer, so book one as early as you can; you can apply up to six months before your trip. If Switzerland is where you spend the most nights, apply to Switzerland even if you also visit other Schengen countries.
Tips that save money
- Price a Swiss Travel Pass against single tickets for your route. It covers trains, boats and city transport and gives discounts on most mountain railways, so it usually pays off if you move between cities a lot.
- Pick two or three mountain trips, not five; the views overlap and each one costs a lot.
- Buy lunch from supermarkets like Coop and Migros; their ready meals and bakery counters cost a fraction of a restaurant, and Indian restaurants are easy to find in the main towns.
- Travel in May, September or October for lower hotel prices and quieter mountain trains.
