Turkey from India: Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast, how many days, and what a trip costs
Turkey gives you a lot in one trip: a great old city on two continents, the strange rock valleys of Cappadocia, white limestone terraces at Pamukkale and a warm coast at Antalya. It's a step up in cost from Southeast Asia, but domestic flights are short and cheap, so you can see very different places in ten days without long drives.
How many days do you need?
Plan on seven to ten days. Istanbul deserves three days for the old city, the Bosphorus and the bazaars. Fly on to Cappadocia for two days, which gives you two early mornings to try for a balloon flight. With ten days, add Pamukkale for a night and finish with three days on the coast at Antalya. Use domestic flights between regions rather than long buses; Pamukkale to Antalya is the one leg that works well by road.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 10-day Turkey trip in December comes to about ₹4,01,400, or ₹2,00,700 per person. That covers return flights, domestic flights between cities, the hotel, food, local transport, the attractions we pick for you, the visa, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. The balloon flight is the biggest single extra, so decide early whether you want it.

Things worth paying for
- Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tour: about ₹3,520 per adult. A guide helps you make sense of fifteen centuries of history in one building.
- Topkapi Palace: about ₹3,960. It's closed on Tuesdays, so plan around that.
- Basilica Cistern: about ₹2,640, a cool underground hall of columns a short walk from the mosques.
- Bosphorus cruise: about ₹2,200, the easiest way to see the city from the water between Europe and Asia.
- Cappadocia hot air balloon: about ₹17,600. Flights leave at dawn and are cancelled in wind, so book it for your first morning and keep the second as a backup.
- Underground city and valleys tour: about ₹4,400, and the Goreme open-air museum of rock-cut churches: about ₹1,760.
- Pamukkale travertines and Hierapolis: about ₹2,640. You walk barefoot on the white terraces, so go early or late to avoid the midday glare.
- Ephesus day trip: about ₹7,040, for the best-kept Roman city in the country.
Free and cheap things to do
Wander the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul; looking costs nothing and bargaining is expected if you buy. Walk up to Galata and along Istiklal Street in the evening. The Princes' Islands ferry day costs about ₹880 and is a calm break from the city. In Cappadocia, watch the sunset from Uchisar castle, and in Antalya spend a free afternoon on Konyaalti beach.
When to go
March, April and October are the best balance: pleasant for walking around Istanbul and Cappadocia, and cheaper than summer. May to September is the peak season, hot inland and best for the beaches at Antalya, with the biggest crowds and prices. November to February is cool and rainy in Istanbul, with daytime highs around 9 to 12°C and snow possible in Cappadocia; it's the quietest and cheapest time.
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a visa for Turkey. Most people apply for a regular visa before travel, which takes some weeks, so start early. If you already hold a valid US, UK, Ireland or Schengen visa or residence permit, you can usually get a Turkish e-visa online instead, and it's much quicker. Use only the official government site for the e-visa.
Tips that save money
- Book domestic flights (Istanbul to Cappadocia, Cappadocia to Antalya) early; fares rise close to the date.
- Get an Istanbulkart travel card for trams, metro and ferries instead of paying for each ride.
- Eat where locals eat: a lunch of lentil soup, bread and vegetable dishes is cheap and easy for vegetarians.
- Avoid peak summer if you're not going to the beach; spring and autumn are cheaper and more comfortable.
