Azerbaijan from India: Baku, Gobustan, Gabala and Sheki, how many days, and what a trip costs
Azerbaijan is a short-haul trip that feels very different from the usual Dubai or Southeast Asia holiday. Baku mixes a walled old city with glass towers and a long sea promenade, the land around it has rock art, mud volcanoes and fires that burn out of the ground, and a few hours north you reach green mountains at Gabala and the old silk-road town of Sheki. The e-visa is quick, which makes it easy to plan at short notice.
How many days do you need?
Plan on five to seven days. Baku needs three days: one for the Old City and the boulevard, one for the Gobustan rock art and mud volcanoes, and one for the Absheron fire sites. With six or seven days, head north for a night in Gabala for the cable car and Nohur Lake, then a night in Sheki for the Khan's Palace and the caravanserai. Shahdag is a good extra day in winter for snow.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 4-day Azerbaijan trip in December comes to about ₹1,63,700, or ₹81,850 per person. That covers return flights, the hotel, food, local transport, the attractions we pick for you, the e-visa, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. Baku hotels cost more than the rest of the country, so staying a night or two in the regions lowers the average.

Things worth paying for
- Old City (Icherisheher) guided walk: about ₹1,760. A guide brings the Maiden Tower, the Shirvanshahs' Palace and the old caravanserais to life.
- Gobustan rock art and mud volcanoes tour: about ₹3,960. Thousands of years old carvings, then bubbling mud cones nearby. The mud volcano road gets slippery after rain.
- Absheron tour: Yanar Dag and Ateshgah fire temple: about ₹3,520. The Ateshgah fire temple has inscriptions left by Indian traders centuries ago, which many Indian visitors find moving. Go to Yanar Dag after dark, when the flames show best.
- Heydar Aliyev Center: about ₹880, for its flowing white building; the outside is worth seeing even if you skip the exhibitions.
- Tufandag cable car in Gabala: about ₹1,760, up into the mountain forests, with snow on top in winter.
- Sheki Khan's Palace: about ₹440, a small summer palace covered in painted walls and coloured glass windows.
- Shahdag mountain resort day trip: about ₹6,160, for skiing or snow play in winter and cool mountain walks in summer.
Free and cheap things to do
Walk Baku Boulevard along the Caspian Sea in the evening and watch the Flame Towers light up. Fountain Square and Nizami Street are the city's busy heart, good for people-watching. In Gabala, Nohur Lake is a calm spot with mountain views, and in Sheki the old town and the caravanserai courtyard cost little or nothing to explore.
When to go
May and June are the most popular months, with mild weather that fits Indian summer holidays. March, April and July to October are the regular season; July and August are hot in Baku with daytime highs around 30°C, while September and October are pleasant and less busy. November to February is cold and windy, with Baku highs around 7 to 13°C, but it's the cheapest time and the season for snow at Shahdag and Gabala.
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders can apply online for Azerbaijan's ASAN e-visa. The standard visa is usually issued in about three working days and allows a stay of up to 30 days, and there's a faster urgent option for a higher fee. Apply only on the official ASAN visa site and carry a printed copy with your hotel bookings and return ticket.
Tips that save money
- Get a BakuCard for the metro and city buses instead of paying for each ride.
- Use ride-hailing apps in Baku rather than hailing street taxis, and agree on prices for longer trips in advance.
- Combine Gobustan and the Absheron fire sites into one full day out of Baku to save on transport.
- Indian restaurants are easy to find in Baku, but local vegetable dishes, bread and plov are cheaper and filling.
