Kazakhstan trip from India: Almaty, mountain lakes, how many days, and what it costs
Kazakhstan has become one of the easiest new holidays for Indians: a direct flight of about three and a half hours from Delhi, no visa for a short stay, and snow-capped mountains that start right at the edge of the city. Almaty, the biggest city, is the base for almost everything: leafy parks, a cable car into the hills, alpine lakes and a canyon that looks like a smaller Grand Canyon. Astana, the shiny modern capital, is a short flight away if you want to add a city break.
How many days do you need?
Plan on five to six days. Give Almaty city a full day for Panfilov Park, the Green Bazaar and the Kok Tobe hill. Spend half a day up at Medeu and Shymbulak, and another half day at Big Almaty Lake. Then keep one full day for Charyn Canyon and another for the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes; both are long drives, so these days start early and end late. If you have two more days, fly to Astana for its futuristic skyline and wide boulevards.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 4-day Kazakhstan trip in December comes to about ₹1,58,700, or ₹79,350 per person. That covers return flights, the hotel, food, local transport, the attractions we pick for you, and a 10% buffer. Food and taxis in Almaty cost less than most people expect; the bigger spends are the flights and the long day trips out of the city.

Things worth paying for
- Medeu and Shymbulak cable car: about ₹2,375 per adult. The cable car climbs from the Medeu skating rink to the Shymbulak ski area and higher still, with snow on the peaks for much of the year.
- Big Almaty Lake trip: about ₹3,800, for a turquoise lake high in the mountains, about an hour and a half from the city.
- Charyn Canyon day trip: about ₹5,700, a walk along the floor of a red rock canyon, with the river at the far end.
- Kolsai and Kaindy lakes day trip: about ₹7,600. Kolsai is a long blue lake in a pine valley, and Kaindy has dead tree trunks standing up out of the water. Many tours combine this with Charyn on the same long day.
- Kok Tobe cable car and city view: about ₹760, best around sunset when the city lights come on.
- Arasan baths: about ₹1,425, a grand old bathhouse with Russian, Turkish and Finnish steam rooms, good after a day of walking.
- Astana city tour: about ₹2,850, covering the Baiterek tower, the giant Khan Shatyr tent and the glass sphere of Nur Alem.
- Astana Opera performance: about ₹2,375, a dressy evening in one of the grandest opera houses in the region.
Free and cheap things to do
Walk through Panfilov Park to see the Zenkov Cathedral, a colourful wooden church built without nails. Go to the Green Bazaar for dried fruit, nuts, cheese and local snacks, and to see how the city shops. Spend an evening on Arbat, Almaty's pedestrian street, with street musicians and cafes. In Astana, visit the Hazrat Sultan Mosque, one of the largest in Central Asia, and walk the Water-Green Boulevard at night when the towers are lit up.
When to go
June to September is the best time: warm days, green valleys and the mountain lakes at their brightest. May and October are pleasant and quieter, though nights get cold in the hills. December to February is for snow lovers, with skiing at Shymbulak, but Almaty city often stays below freezing all day. March, April and November tend to be muddy and grey in the mountains, so they are the weakest months for lake trips.
Do you need a visa?
No, not for a short trip. Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 14 days at a time. For a longer stay you need a visa before you travel. Carry a printout of your return ticket and hotel booking, as immigration officers may ask for them.
Tips that save money
- Use the local ride-hailing apps in Almaty and Astana; fares are low and you avoid haggling with street taxis.
- Join a shared group tour for Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy instead of hiring a private car; the drive is the biggest cost of the day.
- Change money in the city, not at the airport, and keep some cash in tenge for bazaars and small cafes.
- Vegetarians should learn to ask for dishes without meat and look for the many Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants in Almaty.
- Book the Astana leg as a domestic flight early; prices climb close to the date.
