Sri Lanka from India: the best route, how many days, and what a trip costs
Sri Lanka is one of the closest and easiest trips abroad from India. Colombo is about an hour and a half from Chennai, with direct flights from most big Indian cities. Indians get a free ETA, and the food, temples and tea country feel familiar but different enough to be a real holiday. The island is small on the map, but roads are slow, so the route you choose matters more than the number of places.
How many days do you need?
Seven to ten days suits most first trips. A good loop from the airport is Sigiriya for the rock fortress and the Dambulla caves, then Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth, the scenic train to Ella in the hills, a safari at Yala or Udawalawe, and a few days on the south coast at Galle and Mirissa before flying home from Colombo. With only five or six days, pick either the hills (Kandy and Ella) or the beaches (Galle and Mirissa), not both. Most visitors hire a car with a driver, which is good value here and saves a lot of time.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 4-day Sri Lanka trip in December comes to about ₹1,37,000, or ₹68,500 per person. That covers return flights, a car and driver between towns, the hotel, food, the sights we pick for you, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. The ETA is free, and hotels outside Colombo are good value, so the car, the flights and the entry tickets are the main costs.

Sights worth paying for
Several of the big sites have a lower price for visitors from SAARC countries, so carry your passport to every ticket counter. Typical adult prices:
- Sigiriya Rock, the fortress on top of a giant rock: about ₹2,640 at the SAARC rate. Start at opening time to beat the heat and the queues.
- Temple of the Tooth in Kandy: about ₹880. Go for the evening puja, and wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
- Dambulla cave temple: about ₹880, easy to combine with Sigiriya.
- Yala jeep safari for leopards and elephants: about ₹6,160. Minneriya elephant safari near Sigiriya, about ₹3,960, is best from July to October.
- Whale watching from Mirissa: about ₹4,400, from November to April.
- Kandyan cultural dance show: about ₹704, a good first evening in Kandy.
Free and cheap things to do
Walk the old ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset, see the Nine Arch Bridge near Ella when a train goes over it, and climb Little Adam's Peak for the views. Pidurangala, next to Sigiriya, is a cheaper climb with a view of the big rock itself. In Colombo, sit on Galle Face Green in the evening with street snacks. The Kandy to Ella train is one of the most beautiful rides in Asia and costs very little; book reserved seats early.
When to go
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so one coast is usually dry. December to March is the best time for the south and west coast and the hill country, and also the busiest. April to September is better for the east coast, such as Trincomalee and Arugam Bay. May, June and October to November bring more rain to the south and west, but prices drop and the rain often comes in short bursts. In July or August, the Esala Perahera in Kandy is a huge festival with decorated elephants and dancers; book hotels months ahead.
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders get a free 30-day tourist ETA. You still have to apply online on the official ETA site before you fly, so do it a few days ahead and carry a copy. Avoid agency sites that charge a fee for it.
Tips that save money
- Hire a car with a driver for the whole loop instead of paying taxis town by town; drivers usually include their own food and stay.
- Use the SAARC ticket prices at Sigiriya and other sites by showing your Indian passport.
- Eat rice and curry at local places; vegetarian food is easy to find and very cheap.
- Carry some US dollars or Indian rupees to change in town; the airport rate is poorer.
