Maldives from India: resort or local island, how many days, and what a trip costs
The Maldives is closer than most people think. Malé is about an hour's flight from Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, and there are direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Indians get a free visa on arrival. The big decision is where you stay, because that sets most of the cost.
Resort or local island?
A resort island is the classic Maldives: one hotel on its own island, water villas, a private beach and all meals at the resort. It's ideal for a honeymoon, but it's expensive, and meals, transfers and activities all cost extra. A local island such as Maafushi, about 30 minutes by speedboat from the airport, has small guesthouses and hotels at a fraction of the price, a beach for tourists, and cheap boat trips. Local islands don't serve alcohol and ask for modest dress away from the tourist beach. Many couples split the stay: a few nights on Maafushi, then one or two nights at a resort.
How many days do you need?
Four to five nights is right for most trips. There is little sightseeing; the point is to rest, snorkel and enjoy the water, so more nights mostly adds hotel cost. With a split stay, plan on three nights on a local island and two at a resort.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 4-day Maldives trip in December comes to about ₹2,32,900, or ₹1,16,450 per person. That covers return flights, the hotel, food, transfers, the trips we pick for you, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. The hotel type moves the total more than anything else: a luxury resort can cost several times as much as a midrange stay.

Trips worth paying for
Boat trips are much cheaper from a local island than from a resort. Typical adult prices from Maafushi, with the resort price for comparison:
- Snorkelling trip to a reef: about ₹3,080 (at a resort, about ₹7,920).
- Manta and whale shark trip: about ₹8,800 (at a resort, about ₹15,840).
- Sandbank picnic on a strip of sand in the middle of the sea: about ₹3,520.
- Sunset dolphin cruise: about ₹2,640.
- Intro scuba dive, no experience needed: about ₹7,920.
- Resort island day pass from Maafushi, with lunch and the resort beach: about ₹8,800. It's a good way to see a resort without paying for a night.
Free things to do
The house reef and the lagoon are free wherever you stay, so bring or borrow a mask and snorkel. On a local island you can walk the village, watch the fishing boats come in, and sit on the beach for sunset. Malé itself is small and can be walked in a couple of hours, with the fish market and the Old Friday Mosque.
When to go
December to March is the dry season, with calm seas, sunshine and the highest prices, especially at Christmas and New Year. April, October and November are good value. May to September is the wet monsoon, with more rain and wind, but showers are often short, resort prices drop sharply, and it's the best time for manta rays and whale sharks on some atolls. It is warm all year, around 30°C.
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders get a free 30-day visa on arrival. You need a passport valid for six months, a return ticket, a hotel booking, and the online traveller declaration (IMUGA), filled in within 96 hours before you fly.
Tips that save money
- Stay on a local island and take a resort day pass, rather than staying every night at a resort.
- Choose a resort reached by speedboat; seaplane transfers can cost more than a night's stay.
- Check what your resort's meal plan includes. Half board is often the best value, and all-inclusive suits couples who drink.
- Travel in April, October or November for good weather without peak prices.
