Hong Kong from India: Disneyland, the Peak and Macau, how many days, and what a trip costs
Hong Kong packs a lot into a small space: two big theme parks, a harbour full of lights, green hills and beaches, and street markets that run late into the night. It's a short flight from India, Indians don't need a visa for a short visit, and the metro reaches almost everything, so it works well for families and for a quick first trip abroad.
How many days do you need?
Plan on four to five days. Spend a day on Hong Kong Island for the Peak, Central and the old streets around Hollywood Road, and a day in Kowloon for the harbour front, the museums and the night markets. Lantau Island takes a full day for the cable car to the Big Buddha and the fishing village of Tai O. Add one day each for Disneyland and Ocean Park if you're travelling with children. With one more day, you can take the ferry to Macau and back.
What a trip costs
For a couple flying from Delhi and staying in a midrange hotel, a 4-day Hong Kong trip in December comes to about ₹2,19,700, or ₹1,09,850 per person. That covers return flights, airport transfers, the hotel, food, local transport, the attractions we pick for you, travel insurance and a 10% buffer. Hotel rooms are small and expensive by Asian standards, so the hotel is the line to watch; food and transport are cheaper than most people expect.

Things worth paying for
- Hong Kong Disneyland: about ₹7,899 per adult. It's smaller than the parks in the US, which makes it easier to cover in a day with children.
- Ocean Park: about ₹5,627, with rides, pandas and an aquarium on a hill above the sea.
- Ngong Ping 360 cable car and Big Buddha: about ₹3,051. Go early on a clear weekday, as queues and fog both build up later.
- Peak Tram and Sky Terrace 428: about ₹1,672. Go up before sunset and stay for the city lights.
- Aqua Luna harbour cruise on a red-sailed junk boat: about ₹2,599.
- Hong Kong Palace Museum: about ₹678, with treasures from Beijing's Forbidden City.
- Tai O fishing village boat ride: about ₹565, easy to add to the Big Buddha day.
- Macau day trip by ferry: about ₹10,170, for the old Portuguese squares and the casino strip.
Free and cheap things to do
The Star Ferry across the harbour costs only a few coins and gives one of the best views in the city. Walk the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade and the Avenue of Stars, then stay for the Symphony of Lights show at 8 pm. Man Mo Temple and Hollywood Road are free, as are the Ladies' Market in Mong Kok and the Temple Street night market. Repulse Bay is a pleasant city beach. The Science Museum costs about ₹226 and is a good rainy-day plan with children.
When to go
October to December is the best time: dry, sunny and comfortable for walking. January to April is mild and a little cooler. Prices go up in May with Indian summer holidays, in early October with China's Golden Week, and in December for Christmas. June to September is hot and humid with heavy rain and a risk of typhoons, so it's cheaper but needs a flexible plan; when a typhoon signal goes up, parks and ferries can close for the day.
Visa for Indians
Indian citizens can visit Hong Kong without a visa for up to 14 days, but you must complete the free online Pre-arrival Registration before you travel. It's quick, and once it's approved it covers more than one visit for six months, or until your passport expires if that is sooner. Print it or keep it on your phone. For a longer stay, or if the registration isn't approved, you'd need to apply for a visa. Macau has its own entry rules, so check them separately if you plan the day trip.
Tips that save money
- Get an Octopus card at the airport. It works on the metro, buses, ferries and in convenience stores, and the Airport Express return ticket is cheaper than two singles.
- Book theme park and Peak tickets online in advance; they're often cheaper than at the gate.
- Eat at local cafés and dim sum places for good, inexpensive meals; vegetarian food is easy to find around Tsim Sha Tsui.
- Stay near a metro station in Kowloon or Wan Chai, where rooms cost less than in Central.
